Once you’ve joined, you become an Elector, and can get involved as little or as much as you like in the political life of the E-Nation.
Just like the real world, you can vote for Candidates in Elections and By-Elections.
You can write to your Member of the Web Parliament (MWP) or indeed anyone else – say what you want to them – it’s a free country! A note of caution, see the note at the foot of this section on offensive language.
Opinion Pollsters put together polls for the people to cast their opinions about the issues of the day - polls are either public, or the pollster will go for a representative sample, in which case you will get a mail inviting you to take part in the poll - if you have provided the confidential demographic information we requested when you joined.
Once a government has been elected, you can follow the events in Parliament either by taking the trouble to listen in on proceedings in the Public Gallery, or by reading full transcripts after the event, or for a quick summary there are Newspapers that will provide succinct reports on the events of the day, although their Editors will probably put their own interpretation on events.
If you feel like a good heckle, then go to Speakers Corner or your local constituency meeting place and listen to the Orators, butting in if you like. If you can handle it, have a go at being an Orator yourself – get on your soapbox and say what you want. Any member of the government, if they’ve got the guts, can also address Public Meetings in Constituencies.
But, unlike the current world we live in, nothing is passed by Parliament unless it has first been agreed by the people in a Referendum. Instead of MPs following the orders of their party and trooping obediently through the Divisions in the House, the People decide. Your vote in Referendums is actively encouraged. Political parties are therefore consigned to the role of pressure groups.
Feel strongly about a particular issue or political direction? Left-wing, right-Wing, drugs, public transport, further education? You could participate in a Lobby Group, who will formulate their ideas and try to convince the elected representatives of the benefits of their case.
Are your MWPs performing badly? If so, muster up enough support and you can demand a vote of confidence on them.
On this site, you can do all of this while maintaining your anonymity, using a pseudonym.
However, while free speech is actively encouraged, in a well-ordered society, good manners and decency should not need legislating for. The webmaster therefore reserves the right to terminate the membership of any member who is reported for libellous, slanderous, or downright abusive language. See the Terms and Conditions for full details.
Want to Get More Involved?
No problem! There are many different ways you can play a greater role in the life of the E-Nation. Here are the possibilities for a more public role:
MWP Candidate
You could stand for a position as Member of the Web Parliament (MWP), leading potentially to more senior government positions. You may nominate yourself as a Candidate in any of the 121 Constituencies (determined on major postcode boundaries), and are responsible for creating your own manifesto and communicating it to the Electors in your selected Constituency by your candidacy announcement, e-mail or public oration.
MWP
'The number of MWPs per Constituency is determined pro rata on the number of Electors per constituency, with a minimum of one and average of three. The Candidates are selected against the vacant MWP positions in order of number of votes polled. Once an MWP, you may attend debates in the House of Representatives, and become eligible for Ministerial positions.
Minister
MWPs select Ministers from amongst their own number, including the Prime Minister. In the same way as a General Election, MWPs nominate themselves as candidates, but the Electoral School merely comprises the MWPs. Ministers, with the help of their Experts, draft measures (legislations, budgets etc) and these would be debated in the two Houses, returning them both to their true functions. The House of Representatives would also have to approve the wording of Referendum Questions and Options to prevent “loaded” questions being framed.
Newspaper Editor
Always wanted to edit a newspaper? Here’s your chance. Launch your own paper, publish what you like, put whatever spin or gloss on the events of the site that you want, but suffer the humiliation of poor circulation figures if the readership don’t like it.
Expert
The House of Experts is our modern replacement for the House of Lords, which acts like the House of Lords as a revising chamber, and as a source of expert advice to Ministers, instead of civil servants. Do you think you have particular expertise in a field that would benefit the E-nation? Defence, Law, Transport, Agriculture? Submit your CV to a Council of Ministers, and they will consider you for a position as an Expert.
Lobby Group Sponsor/Leader
Got an axe to grind, but want more support behind you? Then sponsor a Lobby Group, gather members around you who can help formulate a point of view and then lobby Parliament to convince them of it. Lobby Groups are the modern form of political party: strong in voice, but with no governmental power.
Opinion Pollster
Do you fancy creating Opinion Polls? Volunteer as a pollster and ask the electorate any question you wish, either in open polls, or those to representative samples, or to Lobby Groups. Test the temperature of the nation!
Political Assistant
See yourself as the power behind the throne? You are free to assist any public figure that you so wish by handling their mail. The application then refers their correspondence for you to handle on their behalf.
You may only perform one of the extended roles above at any one time (except for Political Assistant) in order to avoid conflicts of interest – however, you always remain an Elector.
You will notice that there is no monarchy on this site - this in no way infers a Republican stance on the part of the site - we are politically neutral. In the real world, Bills require Royal Assent to come into law, and the Queen has the power to dissolve Parliament. It would be improper for anyone on this site to operate as if they were the monarchy. Therefore, Royal Assent is assumed once the Electors have given their approval in Referendum to a Bill, and the function to dissolve Parliament is automatic, annually.
Also, at present there is no devolution, or concept of the European Union. This is purely to keep the site simple - a single layer of government. Our minds are not closed on this - let us see what comes out of the democratic debate that this site fosters. We are certainly open to starting up similar sites for other countries, if there is anyone who would like to partner us in such a venture.
